Philodendron Scanden
Philodendron Scanden
Philodendrons are suited to bright, indirect light. Keeping your Philly near a sunny window is a great idea although avoid direct light as this could scorch the leaves. Dappled light is perfect.
Allow the soil of your Philodendron to completely dry out before watering again to prevent overwatering and root rot. During winter months, watering can be less frequent as most plants will be drinking less. Check the soil status regularly to avoid overwatering.
Philodendrons are from a tropical climate so imitating this environment would be key. Warm and humid is what it loves and regular misting to replicate the wet air in the tropics. Do not over water however.
Average indoor temperatures of 16-20°C are best for a Philodendron.
During spring and summer, feed once a month with a general houseplant food. No feeding is necessary during the winter when plant growth naturally slows.
Philodendrons are considered toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
This Philly is a climbing type and would benefit from maintenance as it grows in the form of poles. Helping your new vines to catch on with clips and string is a great way to encourage vertical growth. These plants also grow 'aerial roots' that can be propagated for new plants if you so wished, providing it has a node. These Philodendrons need excellent drainage to avoid becoming waterlogged - look for the chunky looking soil.
